What is a Hope Card?

A Hope Card is not a substitute for a valid protection order, but serves as an easily carried reference to the original order.  Victims of domestic violence may carry the Hope Card conveniently in their pocket, wallet or purse.  The Card is durable and water resistant to prevent damage.

A Dual Purpose

The Hope Card is designed to serve a dual purpose.  Its most vital purpose is in the area of enforcement in which it provides a universally recognized document for law enforcement personnel during an incident involving a violation of a protection order.  Its patented design features provides a standardization that is easily recognizable in any jurisdiction.

The second purpose of the Card is to provide victims more choices to escape an abusive situation by allowing the Card to be used as a reloadable credit card to be used for services such as lodging, fuel and meals.  The idea behind this feature is to fill a void in the system where victims are turned away from shelters due to lack of availability or are reluctant to go to a shelter for additional reasons.  The Card can be loaded with a fixed dollar amount by a variety of organizations and agencies.  This feature is currently under development and is not available at this time.  For more information please contact John Oliveira at joliveira@janeinternational.org.
